What currency is used in Northern Ireland?
• Northern Ireland uses the £ sterling, the currency in circulation in the rest of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland and Wales). £ sterling is not linked to the € euro.
• The euro is used in the Republic of Ireland.
• Mastercard (Access) and Visa credit cards are in general use and cheques, backed by a bank card, are widely accepted.
Will I be able to use euro in Northern Ireland?
• Most large stores will accept euro currency. However it is advisable to enquire first to confirm if there will be a charge attached to this service and to establish the exact exchange rate.
What are the opening times of Northern Ireland banks?
• Banking hours are generally Monday to Friday, 9.30am - 4.30pm, with some opening Saturday mornings. Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) dispense cash at numerous locations - banks, garages, and shopping centres.
What happens if I require medical treatment?
• EU members are entitled to the same level and quality of treatment as they would at home. A European Health Insurance card (EHIC) is required. The form can be obtained on the EHIC website, at a post office or by telephoning: 0845 606 2030. Visitors are strongly advised to take out private travel insurance. What is the situation regarding smoking in public?
• A smoking ban was introduced in Northern Ireland in 2007 prohibiting smoking in all workplaces and enclosed public spaces, including pubs, cafes, clubs and restaurants. A fine of up to £200 will be issued to those smoking in public areas.
What are the standard postage charges?
• Costs to send a postcard are as follows:
• To the UK 32p stamp
• To the Republic of Ireland 38p stamp
• To other EU countries 38p stamp
• To countries outside the EU 68p.
Where can I access the internet?
• Internet cafes can be found in most large towns throughout Northern Ireland and some libraries offer email services free of charge.
Am I liable for VAT while in Northern Ireland?
• While you are in Northern Ireland you will pay Value Added Tax (VAT) on most goods that you purchase.
• To be able to claim a tax refund you must be an eligible traveller who is:
• a non European Community visitor to the UK; or
• a UK resident emigrating from the European Community.
Ask the retailer if they participate in the Retail Export Scheme. If they do, you will be asked to produce your passport to confirm your entitlement to use the scheme. The retailer will then explain the scheme and will issue you with VAT refund documents, showing the purchase made. Return the stamped VAT documentation to the retailer and they will refund the VAT you have paid.
